Here’s a poem I wrote during my poetry class on the power of music, and all the parts music plays in our lives. Enjoy!
Symphony
I am
the strong support you need. A steadying hand,
holding your heart
your hurt
your past
and washing them up to the light. But I am
soothing. Caressing your pain, the cuts life brings. I will
wash over you, a resounding song, a whisper of melodies
To let your tears flow, let them go in the knowledge
That I will listen
and you will listen
To feel whole, despite the hole left
in your heart. But I am
a battle cry, a weapon to be used, a banner
on a long night, a lesson to be learned,
Light in this darkness, to clutch the comments you cannot say
and fling them out into this darkness, for the masses to uphold
and sing in one resounding chorus
“we shall overcome…”
As your own person
now, you listen back
and hear these hums
and suddenly, you are back
in your mother’s arms
and rocking to sleep
and rocking as everything
comes flooding back
hearing this symphony.
The words your mother sang you to sleep,
The words your father cried with his dying deed
so you could live,
The words you whisper to yourself
as you kneel at their grave,
to heal the pain they are not here to soothe.
But I am here, this
music, this
music you use for unburying, for untidying the ropes holding you in this pain.
I am here. Notes and symphonies, melodies and hopes
in the simplest song, so
you can live.
